Ok, we’ve been found out! We like watching marine animals do their thing so much we are documenting it to share with the world. It includes how animals do the ‘no pants dance’ and have sex. A bit odd? Yes. Fascinating? Hell yeah!
Their exploits puts us land lovers to shame. Think detachable penises, lovers that bite on and never let go and blokes giving birth to babies. We were lucky enough to feed our voyeuristic tendencies this week watching one of the greatest sex shows on earth, coral spawning on the Great Barrier Reef!
This year we were joined by fellow water baby and author of Kama SEAtra : Secrets of Sex in the Sea, Sheree Marris. The task? Capture the event for the first time entirely in 4K for Japanese broadcaster NHK.
The backdrop for this spectacle was Flynn Reef where a combination of staghorn, plates and porites corals spawn. Quoted as being ‘the world’s largest synchronised climax’. The water was a sea of soupy sex with a mass release of sperm and eggs which randomly hook up to make baby corals, that settle on the reef.
We captured some stunning footage of this jubilant event. This involved the prediction of an earlier spawning taking place. Along with the footage, we documented this change in timing and were there at the precise coral spawning moment.
It seems the more we think we know, the less we really do…
