Sometimes what you think will be the simplest of shoots ends up being the most challenging. A recent Passion Picture for an up coming National Geographic special was just this! Photos of marine animals showing fluorescent colours under UV and blacklight are very popular on the web and in magazines. However these images are done at a macro scale, with a LOT of blacklight and often require long exposures. The sequence we where asked to film was a wide angle shot with lots of fluorescent animals. One of the main problems is only a small percentage of colours are actually fluorescent and in the wild these are sparsely distributed with the dominant colour being green. To achieve the look we were after we built our own coral reef to show the range of colours. We collected green, red, yellow and orange under permit by Cairns Marine Aquarium. The RED EPIC camera was up for the challenge capturing this fluorescent array better than any other system trailed. The end result is an amazing sequence of colours which will appear on National Geographic later this year.
